My thoughts on LOST...

After countless hours in front of the TV, my favorite show has finally come to an end. I won't even get into the depths of why I connected with this show, or how this show connected with me...that would be a whole separate story. For now, my thoughts on what the series meant - in a nutshell. Mind you...this is just my opinion.

LOST was about love, faith and free will. The 6th and final season showed what the characters we grew to love were doing both in their real lives (on the island) and in their after life (the sideways reality). First off, I am a firm believer that "what happened, happened". Everything we saw for the first 6 seasons did actually occur. Their plane did crash, Jacob did exist, and the Island did hold special and magical properties. The sideways reality showed what the characters were doing in their afterlife. Every character was different from their real lives - most for the better. The one thing these characters were all missing was love. As soon as Charlie and Desmond began to have their flashes, it showed a way for all the characters to remember who their true love was in their real lives.

As Jacob explained to Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley; all of them were lost in life. All of them were alone. All of them needed to find something. Jacob brought them to the island to help them find their way. He told Kate he crossed her name off the wall because she became a mother - she had found love and a purpose. Through the efforts of all the Oceanic survivors - and the many other people they came in contact with on the island - most of our main characters found love, and at one point in time - if even for a short while - were happy.

Back to the finale...

I believe all of the events in the sideways reality were Desmond causing people to remember their love in life, and their moment when they were most happy - and least "lost". Once they found this, they could all reunite with the people who played a part in their happiest points in their lives, and finally move on. Some of the characters still had yet to reconnect with their moment, or had unfinished business - they had to stay behind and wait. For example, Daniel still hadn't completely reconnected with Charlotte, and Ben told Hurley he couldn't go yet, he still had things to take care of - I'm assuming it had to involve Alex. Once Jack spoke with his father, he finally let go of all the feelings he had, reconnected with Kate, and was able to move on. The afterlife they existed in, or the place they were moving on to is also left open for your own interpretation. When Jack and Christian were speaking at the end of the show, the stained glass window behind them had symbols from most of the major religions - Christianity, Muslim, Buddhist, Judaism...just to name a few. This show was always about faith, regardless of what your faith is.

The other thing that had me thinking was when everyone actually died. Christian Sheppard made the commend that everyone dies, some earlier than others, which made me believe all the characters died at their own time. Jack clearly died on the island in the bamboo forest, Sun and Jin died on the sub, Christian died in Australia...and the rest of the characters who didn't die before the conclusion of the show went on to live out the rest of their lives. I think Frank, Miles, Kate, Clair and Sawyer all got off the Island and found their way back home. I think Hurley did become protector of the island with Ben as his assistant, and helped Desmond get back home to Penny. I also believe Hurley stayed protector to the island for an indefinite amount of time until he could pass it on to someone else - then he and Ben were allowed to die. I believe this because as soon as Jacob wasn't protector, Richard was able to age (his gray hair).

The end of the show resolved with all the characters coming back together to finally "move on" with the people who they shared the most important moments of their life with. Some died on the island, some probably died many years later. Kate even told Jack that she had been waiting for him for a long time...how long? Once they did find each other, they were back to the point in their lives where they were happiest, the most loved, and the most complete...

LOST took everyone on a roller coaster of emotions - following characters whom many of us could relate to in one form or another. I think the show reminds us what to look for in ourselves and what to look when we have our eyes open. Sometimes it just takes an Island to help find the one thing to complete each of us..
